Our Objectives

Building climate resilience in Atlantic aquaculture

Strategies to strengthen climate adaptation in Atlantic aquaculture

CLIRAQUA aims to strengthen the resilience of aquaculture in the Atlantic Area in response to the impacts of climate change. To achieve this, the project brings together research centres, public institutions and aquaculture stakeholders from several European countries to analyse climate risks, develop innovative technologies and promote sustainable adaptation strategies. Through transnational cooperation and knowledge exchange, the project will help improve the sector’s capacity to face environmental challenges and ensure its long-term sustainability.

Specific project objectives

The project is structured around three specific objectives addressing the main challenges that climate change poses for aquaculture in the Atlantic Area.

Climate impact analysis

Understanding how climate change affects aquaculture ecosystems and key species across the Atlantic Area through environmental monitoring, scientific analysis and vulnerability mapping.

Action areas

Analysis of climate impacts on marine and inland aquaculture environments

Development of georeferenced vulnerability maps

Assessment of climate vulnerability in key aquaculture species
Dissemination of scientific results and knowledge exchange

Adaptation solutions

Developing and testing innovative technologies and ecosystem-based solutions to improve the resilience and sustainability of Atlantic aquaculture systems.

Action areas

Development of adaptive management protocols for aquaculture
Testing technologies for ecosystem restoration
Monitoring systems to prevent emerging environmental risks
Capacity building and technology transfer to stakeholders

Governance and participation

Strengthening cooperation, knowledge exchange and policy support to improve climate adaptation strategies in the aquaculture sector.

Action areas

Development of climate governance frameworks for aquaculture
Participatory processes with stakeholders and local communities
Creation of a transnational collaboration platform
Communication, awareness and dissemination activities
